1. Choose the Right Format
For fresh graduates, a reverse chronological format works best. Keep it to ONE page. Use a clean, single-column layout with no tables, columns, or text boxes (these confuse ATS parsers).
Avoid: Fancy graphics, photos, colored side columns, or "Skills Progress Bars" — these all confuse ATS and look unprofessional to international employers.
Use: Standard fonts (Calibri, Arial, or Georgia), 10–12pt body text, 1-inch margins, and clear section headers.
2. Essential Sections
Header
Full name (large), phone, professional email (firstname.lastname@gmail.com, NOT nicknames), LinkedIn URL, GitHub URL, city/country. NO photo, NO CNIC, NO date of birth for international applications.
Professional Summary
2–3 lines. "Recent CS graduate with expertise in React and Node.js. Built 4 deployed web applications and contributed to 2 open-source projects. Seeking a full-stack developer role where I can contribute to scalable product development."
Skills
Languages: Python, JavaScript, SQL | Frameworks: React, Node.js, Django | Tools: Git, Docker, AWS | Concepts: REST APIs, Agile, CI/CD. Keep it clean and scannable.
Projects (Most Important!)
This is YOUR experience. List 3 projects with: Name | Tech Stack | [GitHub] [Live Demo] | 2–3 bullet points using action verbs + metrics. "Built a real-time chat app using Socket.io serving 500+ test users."
Education
University, Degree, Graduation Year, CGPA (only if above 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0+). Include relevant coursework if you have no projects in that area.
Certifications
List: AWS Cloud Practitioner | Google Python Certificate | CompTIA Security+. Each cert shows initiative and is ATS-searchable.
3. Write Powerful Bullet Points (STAR Method)
Bad: "Developed a website for a local business."
Good: "Built a full-stack e-commerce platform using React and Django for a local retailer, reducing order processing time by 60% and increasing online sales by PKR 200,000/month."
The formula: Action Verb + What You Did + Technology Used + Quantified Impact.
Action verbs to use: Built, Developed, Designed, Implemented, Optimized, Automated, Reduced, Increased, Deployed, Integrated, Led, Collaborated.
4. Tailor Your Resume for Every Application
A generic resume gets generic results. For every application:
- Read the job description carefully and note the key technologies mentioned
- Mirror that language in your resume (ATS is keyword-matching)
- Reorder your skills section to put their most-wanted skills first
- Adjust your Summary to reflect what THIS company specifically values
